The City of Lucca has officially confirmed that there will be no procession with the Santa Croce (Holy Cross) on the eve of the Volto Santo‘s feast day. The traditional illumination of the procession route from San Frediano to the cathedral of San Martino, on 13 September 2020, will take place however, using LED votive candles for the first time.

In their joint announcement, Mayor Alessandro Tambellini and Archbishop Paolo Giulietti of Lucca said they had reached the decision after consulting with the numerous civic and religious organizations involved. Given the fear that maintaining social distancing and other safety norms instituted since the onset of COVID-19 would be too onerous, they decided to cancel the procession and limit festivities to religious ceremonies inside the catthedral starting the 10th thru the 14th of September 2020.

It is possible to register to attend some religious events by going to the link: https://www.diocesilucca.it/santacroce2020cattedrale/). Some events are by invitation only. NoiTV will televise ceremonies from the cathedral live on 13 September 2020 at 21:00.
